205th Birthday of Taras Shevchenko

On March 9, Kharkiv and the whole Ukraine celebrated the 205th birthday of Taras Shevchenko, a Ukrainian poet and thinker.

The event was attended by several hundred citizens, including the first deputy chairman of the Kharkiv Regional Administration Mark Becker, the first deputy chairman of the Kharkiv Regional Council Viktor Kovalenko, Deputy Mayor of Kharkiv Svetlana Gorbunova-Ruban, clergy, diplomats, military personnel and representatives of Kharkiv educational institutions.

Participated in the event and representatives of the National University of Pharmacy, in particular – teachers and students of the Department of Quality Management. They listened to the prophetic Shevchenko poems and laid flowers to the monument.

Some interesting facts about the Taras Shevchenko Monument:

  • total height of the monument – more than 16 meters, height of the statue of Taras Shevchenko – 4,5 meters;
  • the artistic style of the monument can be defined as Socialist Realism and the Stalinist Baroque;
  • the authors of the monument – Soviet sculptor Matthew Manizer and architect Joseph Langbard;
  • the monument was officially opened on March 24, 1935, that is, 9 months after Kharkiv was no longer the capital of the Ukrainian SSR;
  • the monument is one of the symbols of the Kharkiv
